What these numbers are, and what they are not
Worth reading once, because the distinction is the whole point of the site.
Not an appraisal
An appraisal is a qualified professional’s opinion of value, formed with the item in front of them and usually written down and signed. Nothing on this site is that, and nothing here can substitute for one. The tools apply arithmetic to a weight and a purity that you typed in, using a market price fetched a few minutes ago.
Not a measurement of your item
The site has never seen your jewellery. It takes the purity from what you tell it the stamp says — and a stamp is a claim about the metal, not a test of it. If the stamp is wrong, absent, or describes a plated layer rather than the item, every figure that follows from it is wrong too.
Melt value is not resale value
Melt value is the market price of the metal content and nothing else. A piece may be worth far more intact — for its maker, its age, its stones or its condition — and melting is irreversible. This is set out at length in melt value is not what your jewellery is worth.
Not an offer, and no buyer is recommended
No figure here is an offer to buy anything, and this site does not buy, sell, broker or refer. The payout percentages published beside melt value are ranges the trade itself publishes, given so you can judge an offer for yourself. They are not a prediction of what any particular buyer will say, and no buyer is endorsed by their presence.
Prices are indicative and may be stale or wrong
Metal prices come from a third-party feed and exchange rates from published central-bank reference rates. Both may be delayed or unavailable. They are indicative market levels, not dealer quotes — no dealer is obliged to transact at them.
Estimates are labelled as estimates
The gemstone tools estimate weight from measurements using standard trade factors, and assume a normally cut stone. Real stones vary. Ring-size conversions between national scales are conventions that different makers round differently, and published charts disagree by up to half a size.
No advertising, affiliate links or paid placement
At the time of writing this site carries no advertising, no affiliate links and no paid placements, and receives no payment from any buyer, jeweller, refinery or marketplace. If that ever changes it will be disclosed here and on the About page.
No relationship with similarly named businesses
Jewelers Gallery is an independent reference site. “Gallery” is a common word in the jewellery trade and several unrelated shops use it in their names. This site is not connected with, endorsed by, or acting for any of them.
