Why this site is different
Nearly every gold calculator online is run by somebody who wants to buy your gold.
Their numbers are not wrong, exactly. They are the opening position in a negotiation you did not know you had entered. This site has nothing to sell and nobody to refer you to, so it can tell you the part they leave out: what the metal is worth, and how much less than that people actually pay.
This is a measurement site, never an appraisal.
An appraisal is a professional opinion of value, given by a qualified appraiser who has the item in front of them. Arithmetic performed on a number you typed is not that, cannot be that, and must never be dressed up as that.
Melt value and resale value are always kept apart.
They are different quantities and confusing them is the single most expensive mistake a person selling jewellery makes. Melt is what the metal weighs in money. What a buyer hands you is melt minus their margin — and if the piece has a maker, a stone or an age worth something, selling it for melt destroys that value permanently.
No buyer is recommended, ranked, rated or linked.
The moment this site earns a referral fee on a sale, every payout percentage on it becomes suspect. Typical payout ranges are published so the reader can judge an offer themselves; who they take it to is not our business.
Never tell the reader to sell, hold, or buy.
We do not know whether the ring is scrap or an heirloom, and the difference is not in the arithmetic. State what the metal contains and let the person who owns it decide.
No invented numbers, and no false precision.
Every constant on this site is either a defined unit, a published standard, or a range presented as a range. A stamp is a nominal claim about purity, not a measurement of it — where that matters, the page says so instead of quietly rounding it away.
